I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but a couple of weekends ago was the first time that Jordan and I ventured out to one of probably thousands of markets in Metro Manila.
It was all so overwhelming at first trying to figure out where it was and just what they had to offer, but it quickly became exciting as everyone was so friendly and I was having fun picking out all of our fruits and vegetables for the week.
One of the things I was most excited to see was young green jackfruit! I had first come across it in a can at a Filipino market in Kansas City after I had had some amazing tacos at my favorite vegan restaurant Fud, but the funny thing is I never saw it anywhere here. I was almost jumping up and down when I saw it and quickly grabbed a couple of bags. Later in the week I made a mean "pulled pork" style bbq sandwich with it! YUM! So glad to know where I can find it, as it will now be gracing our menu more often.
As soon as we got home I lined out all of our spoils and snapped a picture. We got all of this for about $24. BOOM! Ok, so maybe someone could have done a better job haggling prices, but I felt really good about all of this.
And then came this past weeks adventure. There were a few specialty items I've been reading about and talking to Jordan about, so he took it upon himself to do some research to see where we might be able to find them. So for Mother's Day he surprised me with a new market to tackle.
The Legazpi Sunday Market. But I'm getting ahead of myself. We first hit up Starbucks for some coffee since it had been a late night and an early morning for us. I know I know...why go to Starbucks with all of this food and beverage before us. Well...we didn't know what was there. Now we do and next time, we know to go straight to the market and support all things local!
But for the time being Starbucks it was. Eep! These two just melt my heart. We had fun chit chatting and sipping our coffee just enjoying the slow day.
It was just fun to be out enjoying the day as a family and exploring a bit of what this great city has to offer.
Again...people were quite friendly, especially these guys. We probably talked to them for 20 minutes about the rundown of the market and chatting about where we're from and what we're doin.
One of the main reasons we hit up this market was this stand. So many goodies to be had here! I walked away with some real gems I'll tell you about later.
I just love all of the amazing fruits and vegetables we have right at our fingertips! Getting out and seeing places like this have just given me a new energy. I feel like just before we were leaving the States I was discovering a whole new world of food. And loved exploring and finding new things. When we got here, though I was able to find a lot at the grocery stores here in Manila, I lost that love of adventure. In the past few weeks I have tried more things than I did in our whole time here. Like I said...it's sad really. Jordan doesn't know what a can of worms he's opened. I'm already dying to get back out there. What about you? Are you adventurous when it comes to food? Or do you just stick to the same ol' same ol'? Spice up you life and try something new this week. Who knows...you just might like it!
